Gustav von Epstein | The Emperor's Banker # 2019

Politically and historically significant mansions in Austria

Where else can you find such a grand boulevard like the Vienna's Ring? And in which city is there such a density of palaces as in Vienna?

Emperor Franz Joseph and Gustav von Epstein - that was an alliance that enabled the Habsburgs to move against the Prussians at Königgrätz - albeit with a disappointing outcome for the Austrians. Nevertheless, this was how Gustav Epstein's rise to become one of the most important figures on the Ringstrasse began. As the “emperor's banker” and as a major industrialist, he had the money he needed to afford the most expensive palace on the Ring. In his film, Franz Gruber presents this house, the Palais Epstein next to Parliament, and tells the dramatic and tragic story of Epstein's commitment to the old emperor.
