Death is among us - downtown Vienna cemeteries # 2024

If you place a map of the historic cemeteries over the map of Vienna's city center, you will realize that almost every place was - or better said: still is - a cemetery. Because when the final resting places in the first district were gradually abandoned, there was no technology to rebury all of the graves. So today we live on the dead of past centuries - death has its constant presence among us.
The director Gigga Neunteufel investigates the cemeteries and shows which popular places and promenades are historically located in the realm of the dead. And she asks passers-by and tourists whether they are aware of how close life and death are intertwined in these locations.
