Discovery | bathing culture and the body cult
The discovery of the free body began with Vienna's baths in the 19th century. Even if at the beginning of the bathing culture people went into the water with the same clothes as they wore in the street, their body image and swimwear gradually adapted. In the newly produced two-part series, the author shows how the baths in Vienna and the surrounding area became mirror images of the society and how a new understanding of the body had developed. In a Schnitzlerian world, in which chastity and discipline were hyped, it took a while before people wanted to publicly acknowledge their quasi-naked bodies.
